Produced by Zapruder’s other films, COUNTRY TOWN RESCUE is the compelling story of how ordinary Australians come together to save a small rural town whose falling population threatens its very existence.

Filmed over 12 months, this series follows five families who ‘up sticks’ with their kids and move to Trundle, a small town in central western NSW. They are welcomed by a passionate group of locals determined to see the small town not only survive but prosper.

Congrats to reporter Monique Schafter, shooter/director Aaron Smith and editor Andrew Glover. The Hungry Beast team has been nominated for a Walkley Award for Best Current Affairs TV Reporting (less than 20 minutes) for their story Trapped In Your Own Body.

The piece chronicled the story of Maree Bourke-Calliss, who suffered a massive stroke from a knock received during a netball game. She is unable to move or speak and can only communicate by blinking.

For the interview, the Hungry Beast team sent Maree questions in advance and it took her nearly a week to blink out the answers. Maree’s responses were read out by her sister Berni.

The Hungry Beasts have been nominated alongside more seasoned performers from Dateline and Sunday Night, and even eclipsed 60 Minutes for a nomination. There were approximately 1300 entries in this year’s awards.

The winners will be announced at a gala presentation in Brisbane on November 27.

During the second season of Hungry Beast reporters Ali Russell and Kirk Docker were also nominated for a Walkley Award for Coverage of Indigenous Affairs for their story, Gang Of 49.
